1. What the hour actually covers
A trained colour designer works from what you are keeping rather than a fan deck in isolation: floor tone, worktops, cabinet finish, tile, and the light the room actually gets at the time of day you use it. For an exterior, that means looking at roofline, stonework, hardscaping and neighbouring properties rather than picking a colour that looks good on a swatch and wrong on the house.
2. Why it is included rather than sold separately
Picking the wrong sheen costs more than picking the wrong colour, because a homeowner rarely repaints just to change a sheen. Flat on ceilings so downlights do not pick out every imperfection. Eggshell in hallways, kids rooms and anywhere that gets wiped. Satin or semi-gloss enamel on trim and doors, because it levels out brush marks as it cures and takes a wipe-down without burnishing. Getting the sheen right the first time is worth more than the hour costs us to provide, which is why it stays free.
3. What to have ready
None of it is essential, and none of it changes whether the hour is free. A rough idea of the mood you want in each room helps. Any colours you are already considering, or a photo of something you liked. Samples of flooring, tile or worktop you are keeping, if you have them to hand.
It also helps to walk the rooms at the time of day you actually use them. A north-facing bedroom and a south-facing kitchen take light so differently that the same colour chip can read cool in one and warm in the other, and the designer wants to see that difference rather than guess at it from a single visit at one time of day.
4. What you leave with
Specific picks written down, sheen included, on your estimate alongside the prep and the coat count. Nothing is verbal only. If you are not ready to decide on the day, the written estimate is yours to keep and think over at your own pace.
Does a bigger job get more time?
The hour is the same whether the job is one bedroom or a full exterior, and in practice a larger job often runs over an hour without anything extra being charged for it. A whole-house interior means more rooms to walk through and more decisions to talk through together, so the designer stays until the picks are actually made rather than cutting the visit off at sixty minutes. The free colour consultation is not metered against job size, and there is no version of the estimate where it gets shortened to save time.

A good rule for the visit itself: bring questions rather than a fixed answer.
